Are you ready in
case of an emergency?
Is your community equipped to work with people with disAbilities?

Learn things you can do to prepare for a disaster as a person with a disability or to ensure your organization/business will be able to meet the needs of people with disabilities!

The Alliance has put together a series of 5 planning worksheets to help you prepare for a disaster. The Alliance works with people setting and achieving Independent Living goals. These worksheets were created in a goal-oriented format to be integrated into that process, but are a great resource for anyone doing emergency preparedness planning. If you are interested in working with the Alliance on goals that can help you live as an integrated member of the community, please contact us!

With these forms, it does matter which one you start with, just that you start somewhere and stick with it!

Section 1: Create a local network and communications plan to be used in an emergency or disaster.

Section 2: Compile important information and complete a disaster and emergency preparedness self assessment.

Section 3: Meet with your network, plan to complete preparedness tasks, and further asses you emergency preparedness.

Section 4: Get informed about community plans in place for emergency and disaster preparedness

Section 5: Create an emergency preparedness kit that would sustain you and your household for one week in case of an emergency or disaster. Here is a sample kit building calendar to help you put together a kit in small steps over a five month period.

Additional information on emergency preparedness for people with disabilities and ways to become involved in planning efforts:

  • More tips for disaster preparedness for people with disabilities from King County's 3 days, 3 ways emergency preparedness campaign.
  • Read the Alliance's Position Paper on Emergency Preparedness for People with disAbilities and ways we could improve and enhance response systems. (coming soon!)
  • Become a member of a Citizen Emergency Response Team to learn how you can help prepare your community for working with disabilities. You will be trained in assisting within your neighborhood, should an emergency arise.
  • Read one woman's account of surviving through the 2006 winter storms, as a person with a disability.
  • Have an emergency plan for your business that is inclusive of all people.
