Independent Living Program Staff I


Job Description

The Independent Living Program Staff assures quality in the fulfillment of the core IL services (including Information and Assistance, skills training, peer support and advocacy) in accordance with the independent living philosophy. The IL Program Staff I is primarily responsible for obtaining and coordinating information. This position works in the office during business hours in order to be available to callers and participants.  The IL Program Staff will build identity and acceptance through peer leadership among people with disabilities including those in underserved communities.

The position is supervised the Executive Director and monitored by IL Program Staff II or III.

The IL Program Staff I will:

  1. provide information and assistance services by phone, TTY, office visit, e-mail, and mail.
  2. keep informational resources current and organized.   Maintain a list of information available.
  3. complete forms that relate to task (I&A forms, ILPs, file notes) as soon as possible.
  4. research information and resources that are requested by IL Staff II/III or the Director.
  5. recruit and coordinate peer groups and arrange accommodations.
  6. provide independent living skills training services that are coordinated by IL Staff II or III.
  7. assure fulfillment of contract performance obligations for the Alliance.
  8. write and submit reports required under contracts and grants.
  9. Be a source of information about disability issues and accommodations with organizations and agencies.
  10. Participate in Alliance events and activities as requested.
Minimum Qualification
  1. A Bachelor’s degree, in any field, from an accredited college or university AND

    One year Full Time Equivalency (FTE) paid employment experience in the direct provision of social service to individuals with disabilities.

    OR
    90 quarter or 60 semester hours of coursework, in any field, from an accredited college or university AND

    Two years Full Time Equivalency (FTE) paid employment experience in the direct provision of social services to individuals with disabilities.

    OR

    A High School diploma or GED AND

    Four years Full Time Equivalency (FTE) paid employment experience in the direct provision of social services to individuals with disabilities.

  1. Personal experience in living with a disability.  Be knowledgeable about characteristics, issues and concerns of persons with disabilities. 
  1. Demonstrate active listening skills in Information and Assistance and other direct services.

  2. Ability to establish and maintain detailed records and forms.
  1. Demonstrate the ability to work both independently and cooperatively.      
  1. Ability to travel to out-of-office locations to attend or conduct training as needed.
  1. Be capable of preparing one’s own professional work that includes the ability to perform word processing on a computer.
